Allure magazine has interviewed plastic surgeons, dermatologists and stylists to advise you how you to put your best breasts forward. From your bra style to surgical improvements, there are many ways to improve your décolletage. If your breasts are too small, then you may be considering implants. In 2012, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), Americans spent more than $1 billion on breast augmentation surgeries.
Basic breast implant advice
Don’t bring your plastic surgeon a picture of the perfect breasts to copy. Rib cage size, breast width and a dozen other factors will determine your ideal breast size. Bigger implants are not always better. If they are too big, they can permanently damage your breast tissue and ribs. The best place for breast implant incisions, with the lowest complication rate, may be in the fold under the breast (depending on your body). These incisions will appear like a little red crease. Lastly, be aware that your implants will not lift your breasts; only a breast lift can do that.
Avoid unnatural-looking implants
If you want natural-looking implants, stay away from breasts that have a defined 360 degree border. Avoid oversized implants that create a wide, bony gap between the breasts. If your implants are very large, your breasts will not naturally fall to the side when you lay on your back. You don’t want breasts that, in profile, look as full on top as on the bottom or implants that are so high that your nipples point downward. Talk to your plastic surgeon about creating the most natural look for you.
Style your breasts
Stylists suggest silicone cutlet inserts to make the top half of your breasts full; they almost never use push up bras alone. If you have very large breasts, dress like Christina Hendricks and emphasize your waistline. If your breasts are small, you can reveal some cleavage in a slinky dress, but be sure to use lifting tape to keep breasts in place. Clashing bra straps and lacy bras, peeking out of your tank top can be a nice fashion touch. You can use a shimmery body lotion to emphasize cleavage.
Maintain your breasts
Sun exposure causes breasts to droop by breaking down collagen and elastin fibers in the skin. Wrinkles, spots and skin laxity (looseness) can be avoided if you cover them up. You can do chest presses against the wall, but if you do them with weights, the muscles that develop can ruin your cleavage. Although, not exactly cosmetic, performing a breast exam monthly will help you keep your breast health front and center.
Whatever your breast size and shape, a positive attitude will improve your look. For professional assistance, contact a board-certified plastic surgeon.
