Nipple and Areola Reduction: The Latest Plastic Surgery Trend That Took Over 2017
Beauty trends throughout history have been about everything from lip color to foot size to hairstyle to body shape. In 2017, a new beauty trend came to our attention: nipple and areola reduction. These procedures, recently rising in popularity among women everywhere, reduce the size of the nipples and areolas (the darker circles around the nipples) to enhance the appearance of the breasts.
Why Nipple and Areola Reduction?
Surgeries to improve the size of one’s breasts have already been popular for decades. As women continue to pay close attention to the details, they are now considering whether there is an ideal size for a woman’s nipples and areolas. In a study by The Plastic Surgery Group, survey participants rated the attractiveness of breasts with nipples and areolas of various sizes. Those that occupied 15 percent of the breast were considered too small, and those that occupied 50 percent or more were considered too large. When the nipples and areolas occupied 25 to 30 percent of the breasts, those images were rated the highest in terms of attractiveness. Since it is common for the areolas to stretch as the breasts grow, age, and endure pregnancy and breastfeeding, areola reduction has become a popular solution.
Nipples and areolas have also become the target of improvement procedures for reasons other than size. Women may want nipple and areola reduction to correct issues such as droopy or long nipples. Sometimes, nipple and areola reduction will be recommended if breast augmentation or breast reduction surgery is also desired because resizing the breasts will alter the proportions of the nipples and areolas. These procedures may also be sought by women whose nipples and areolas have changed due to aging, pregnancy, or weight gain and weight loss.
Nipple and Areola Reduction Surgery
Nipple and areola reduction may be performed for healthy women who have realistic expectations. Depending on your needs, you can have either or both aspects resized to improve your breast appearance. The surgeon will carefully remove excess tissue to improve the appearance and size of the nipples and/or areolas, and you will return home with a quick recovery ahead of you. Most women will need only one or two days off from work and light activities, and any bruising or swelling usually fades after just a few weeks. Additionally, it can easily be done under local anesthesia. Nipple and areola reduction may be combined with other breast enhancement procedures if desired, in which case the recovery may be somewhat different. Afterward, the breasts will look more youthful, balanced, and aesthetically pleasing.
