Breast Reduction
Women with overly large breasts can suffer from a variety of discomforts. If you experience self-consciousness, skin irritation beneath the breast crease, or back, neck and shoulder pain, breast reduction may be a solution for you. This procedure, also know as reduction mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure which can make the breasts smaller, lighter, firmer and more proportionate to the rest of the body.
Am I a Good Candidate?
Dr. Stevens recommends breast reduction for adult women who are in good physical health and have realistic expectations for improvement as well. Young women may be advised to postpone surgery until the breasts have fully developed. Similarly, women who plan to breast feed may be advised to postpone surgery until after they have nursed.
What to Expect After Surgery
After surgery, it is common to experience swelling during the initial healing phase. An elastic bandage or support bra may need to be worn to help minimize this and to provide support.
It is not uncommon for the breasts to ache for several weeks and this can be alleviated with prescription pain medication. Work and other light activity can usually be resumed within one to two weeks.
