Super model Tyra Banks came clean years ago on her show about her battle with bulge on her backside. Diet and exercise alone don’t always target those dimples that can show up on the legs and thighs. Millions of women around the world deal with the dreaded reality of cellulite. Fact: no one is exempt!

A popular treatment currently on the market is the recently FDA-approved Cellulaze, a minimally invasive, laser-assisted procedure performed by a qualified physician, to increase your skin’s natural thickness for a smoother, healthier look.

With many machines and expensive treatments currently on the market, it can be difficult to decipher what works and what doesn’t to really target and banish cellulite. Cellulaze, done under local anesthesia, works through a small laser tube that is inserted under a patient’s skin. The laser heats up to melt lumpy pockets of fat and cuts through the fiber bands that pull the skin and cause dimples. The laser then heats the skin to trigger new collagen growth, leading to better elasticity and thickness.

Cellulaze can be effective in as little as one treatment with most patients seeing results that last up to a year.

There is very little pain associated with the procedure and patients can resume normal activity in as little as one to two days.

This procedure is recommended for patients who are not significantly overweight and have moderate cellulite.

The thought of coming face to face with a needle in order to smooth out lines and wrinkles can still make many patients queasy. And for those not up to the challenge, there may be a new anti-aging savior coming via topical Botox that makes it easier to get the non-surgical treatment sans the pain.

Revance Therapeutics is currently testing its topical Botox gel (known now as RT001) which is slated should work almost as good as that of a traditional Botox injection. This new development spells good news for patients that have yet to take the plunge into the world of injectibles but are still looking for a surgery-free way to keep the signs of aging at bay.

Dr. Stevens answers your questions about this new product below:

How does it work?

Topical Botox (botulinum toxin), like the injectable form, relaxes the muscles by blocking the release of a neurotransmitter known as acetylcholine. The Botox gel is applied by doctors directly on to the skin to soften crow’s feet around the eyes and other fine lines and wrinkles for 30 minutes and then wiped off.

Will it be just as effective as a traditional Botox injection?

Patients mustn’t be too quick to jump on the band wagon of this pain-free solution. While the results have been proven to be good, Dr. Stevens adds that the results won’t be as dramatic as having an actual injection procedure that targets specific areas with precision.

When will it become available?

Still in the testing phase, the Botox gel will have to also go under scrutiny by the Food and Drug Administration for final approval before being released to the public. It may be a while before both doctors and patients are able to get their hands on the newly developed gel.

What other non-surgical procedures are available?

For additional non-surgical options for reversing the signs of aging discover the benefits of other injectibles and procedures; Sculptra, Juvederm, Dysport, Laser Resurfacing.

Lines, wrinkles, sagging and pre-mature aging aren’t only the concerns of mature women looking to turn back the hands of time. Women in their 20’s are starting to pay attention to how they can fight against early signs of aging and they’re not finding it in the latest anti-aging cream. They’re turning to Botox and thermage treatments to stop wrinkles in their tracks.

Treating wrinkles and bothersome lines is a completely different concept than actually preventing wrinkles. Botox treatments may be a necessity for young women who are concerned about fine lines that are already appearing but this is not to be abused.

Doctors argue whether early treatments are necessary or if our youth-obsessed culture is pressuring young women to stay young by starting the round of injections early.

Dr. Stevens recommends avoiding invasive procedures at too young an age. Rejuvenating procedures should be used judiciously as needed for the best results. He sees another trend emerging with the advance of Botox. “We can literally prevent wrinkles from occurring for many years.” For women in their 20’s looking to keep the age demon from showing its face too soon, here are a few anti-aging habits that don’t involve injections or expensive treatments:

Wear sunscreen to prevent sun damage and pre-mature aging

Avoid tanning beds

Avoid smoking and excessive drinking

Speak with a qualified surgeon about preventative treatments that fit your current needs and concerns

Schedule a one on one consultation with Dr. Stevens to speak further about anti-aging treatments and options.

In this tough economy, many people are doing what they can to stay competitive in the job market. Updating their resume, working with career counselors and continuing their education to enhance their skills are all tactics being used to help people maintain their competitive advantage. But looking good on paper isn’t the only thing job seekers are worried about. According to an article in AARP, older workers are looking to plastic surgery and other cosmetic changes to stay competitive in an increasingly youthful workforce. Even men have jumped onto the plastic surgery bandwagon in order to maintain their youthful appearance in a tight job market.

Common procedures for both male and female baby boomers concerned about their aesthetic presentation to prospective employers include:

Neck Lift

Facelift

Brow Lift

Botox

Lip Injections

Breast Augmentation

So does having a plastic surgery procedure really increase your chances of landing that dream job? While it may be an aid in creating a more youthful appearance, your confidence and credentials will be the prime factor of success during the interview process. Electing to have a cosmetic procedure is a personal choice and should not be determined by the job hiring market. Patients should know and understand that recapturing a youthful appearance can certainly be a self-esteem boost, but does not guarantee any kind of professional success.

Imagine reducing wrinkles and smoothing fine lines without needles. That’s the type of claim a new gel on the market that’s supposed to work like Botox is promising. According to an article on WebMD “A topical gel containing botulinum toxin type A — the same toxin as that used in injected Botox — helped reduce moderate to severe crow’s feet wrinkling around the eyes, according to two preliminary studies.”

So how is this pain-free Botox like-solution supposed to work? An applicator is used to apply the gel to a patients’ trouble areas and sits on the skin for 30 minutes. It is then wiped off and the patient is free to walk out. One, two, done.

Currently still under testing before it can get FDA approval, the new gel may be a miracle solution for patients too terrified of needles to take the plunge of having Botox injections. But don’t be fooled by the topical application process. The gel is not a creme and won’t be sold in jars at the beauty counter. Patients will still need to see a qualified doctor for application. While the gel is said to be quite effective for reducing wrinkles it will not be as effective as typical Botox injections which can targert specific muscles with precision.

Find out more about traditional Botox injections and other non-surgical procedures Dr. Steven’s offers at the Lasky Clinic.

These days, wanting sexy, pouty lips like Angelina Jolie is achievable without a complicated surgical procedure, and many patients are opting for lip injections along with other cosmetic procedures. During an in-office visit with your plastic surgeon, you can fill out thin lips with a collagen stimulator that signals the skin to produce more collagen. Lip injections, using fillers like Juvederm, Restylane or Radiesse, can even balance out the face and increase the volume of the lips for a young, radiant look.

What should I expect in the procedure?
Your doctor will determine where to administer the injections after consulting with you on your desired look. The fillers will then be injected directly under the skin for a local effect that you will be able to see immediately. The entire procedure is typically 10 minutes long with minimal discomfort, redness and swelling, and recovery time from lip injections is minimal. Should you have significant discomfort or swelling in the days following the procedure, contact your plastic surgeon.

How long do the results last?
Your doctor will create a customized plan for lip injections to fit the desire of your look. Patients can expect lip injections to last from 6 to 18 months.

To learn more about lip enhancement procedures, including options for fillers and other injectables, contact Dr. Stevens for a consultation.

While the wonders of Botox have been heralded as a non-invasive solution for temporarily erasing fine lines and wrinkles without the recovery time and cost of a traditional facelift, some plastic surgeons believe the injectable can be used to give breasts a boost. For just a couple of thousand dollars, advocates suggest, smaller breasted women with an A or B cup can achieve a temporary lift in their bust line for about four months. The Botox breast lift, which has yet to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration, rightly raises eyebrows (but not breasts), and leads to skepticism among experts in the field.

This new spin on a traditional procedure requires injecting Botox into the pectoralis minor chest muscle. Since Botox blocks nerve impulses to the injected muscles, the rhomboid muscles of the back compensate by pulling the shoulders back, which raises the breasts. In effect, the technique helps to improves posture. While a traditional breast lift entails removing excess skin and reshaping the breasts, the Botox breast lift leaves no visible scars or incisions. Still, the lack of an invasive technique does not necessarily mean it is more effective. In fact, some argue, it is difficult to isolate the pectoralis minor chest muscle for injection since it is covered by the pectoralis major chest muscle, making it hard to achieve the desired outcomes. Moreover, all of the muscles of the chest and back are integral to the lift of the bust line, so injecting only the pectoralis minor may have minimal impact.

In addition, a Botox breast lift requires injecting through a good amount of fatty tissue to reach a muscle, which is inherently more difficult than injecting the thin tissue around the eyes to minimize lines. For this reason, many plastic surgeons argue the results are not only short-lived but unimpressive. They recommend individuals seeking an easy lift either exercise or simply follow what mothers have been saying for years: stand up straight.

With tabloids and the entertainment press, most of us undoubtedly see photos of stars on magazines and the Internet quite often. So when a celebrity is spotted and their appearance has altered, most of us ask, “Did they have work done?”

Those we recognize as having had “work” will most likely be those who attract attention for the not-so-right reasons. I tell my patients at the Beverly Hills’ Lasky Clinic, “You only notice bad surgery.”

Ask anyone and the answer will be the same: the plastic surgery procedures that are most obvious are those that appear unnatural. For example, Botox, when overdone, can produce unattractive outcomes. The prescription medicine, which is injected into muscles to block nerve impulses and thereby inhibit wrinkling, can last up to four months and should not be injected more often than necessary. Like the title of the 1979 Donna Summer-Barbara Streisand duet, enough is enough! Unfortunately, this is an important lesson that some of the rich and famous who frequently grace the red carpet must still learn.

Actress Nicole Kidman, for instance, has been criticized for her overuse of Botox, but now says she “didn’t like it” and no longer uses it. Reality star Kim Kardashian received Botox injections in 2010, but swore off future injections for at least 10 years after she suffered temporary bruising. While these and other stars might stand out because of the undeniable alterations to their appearance, I believe this aesthetic should not be the norm. If an aesthetic approach can be summed up in one word it should be “natural.” I truly believe that good plastic surgery should go unnoticed; not too pulled, not too filled, not too augmented. You should just look good.

But what do you think, readers? Do you believe plastic surgery should look natural? You may tweet me your replies @DrLeslieStevens or on Facebook.

Not every physician with a syringe can deliver consistently good results with filler injections.

Not every physician with a syringe can deliver consistently good results with filler injections.

Dermatologists and plastic surgeons learn to inject Botox and fillers as part of their formal residency training programs and inject-ables are an essential part of a cosmetic practice.

However, on the other hand, gynecologists and other doctors, do not get formal training in injecting fillers, and do not learn any facial anatomy during residency. So why are many people running to these professionals for their fillers? Most start injecting fillers once they are already in practice and have not had any supervision in injection techniques. This can make for a scary cocktail of disaster.

Immediate Past President of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, Dr. Jeffrey S. Dover warns, “Patients need to be vigilant about having an experienced, board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon directly overseeing their injections. You can greatly minimize the chance of complications, or worse, by doing some research.”

Choose the wrong, unqualified doctor to administer your injections and you run the risk of:

Bleeding

Bruising

Infection at the injection site

Itching

Migration of filler material away from the original site

Necrosis (skin death)

Redness

Skin rash

Skin sensitivity

Swelling

Temporary numbness

Temporary paralysis of facial muscles

Under- or over-correction of wrinkles
